Master of Surgery by Module MCh

The Master of Surgery by Module MCh is a postgraduate program designed to enhance the surgical training experience of medical professionals. The program is offered by the RCSI Department of Surgical Affairs and is available on a full-time basis over one year.

Applications and Fees

• Applications for the program are now open.
• The total fee for the program is 6,595.
• The fee includes all resources, access to the online learning portal, and extensive RCSI-only databases.
• A non-refundable online application fee of 50 applies.
• An annual NUI fee of 45 is also payable.

Payment Structure

• The payment structure for the program is as follows:
  • First payment: 1,500 + 45 NUI (to be made within two weeks of acceptance of offer)
  • Second payment: 3,095 (to be paid by the end of October)
  • Third payment: 1,955 (to be paid by the end of March)

Entry Requirements

• To be considered eligible for the program, applicants must hold an MB BAO BCh degree (or equivalent Level 8 undergraduate medical degree) recognized by the World Health Organization.
• Applicants must be able to attend all face-to-face classes on the RCSI campus in Dublin, Ireland.
• Due to the academic time commitments of the full-time program, applicants in full-time employment are strongly advised to pursue the part-time program.

• As part of the application process, applicants are required to submit the following supporting documentation:
  • Full CV, including employment information, academic history, and research experience
  • Copy of passport
  • Copy of educational transcripts (must detail module grades)
  • Proof of sponsorship (where applicable)
  • Evidence of English-language qualification (where applicable)
  • Written statement (300-word response to the question: "How do you perceive completing this program will enhance your career?")

English Language Requirement

• Applicants must have an IELTS score >6.5 (or equivalent) achieved in all sections (reading, writing, and oral).
• Exemptions apply for applicants who have completed undergraduate or postgraduate studies full-time in the medium of the English language (three or more years, cumulatively).

International/Non-EU Applicants

• International applicants can apply for a student visa.
• RCSI will provide a visa letter to support the application for a student visa.
• Applicants must liaise with immigration services to secure their own visa.
• Visa applications must be made a minimum of three months in advance of the course start date.
• Tuition fees must be paid in full for one year.
• Applicants are responsible for securing their own health insurance.

Learning Outcomes

• The program aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge to:
  • Understand the major principles of healthcare ethics and law and their application to a surgical setting
  • Recognize issues and circumstances in healthcare practice and clinical research that raise potential legal liability
  • Develop an idea into a comprehensive research strategy
  • Recognize and manage errors in surgical practice due to human error or medical/surgical devices
  • Understand the medical device design and development process, from concept to commercialization
  • Comprehend the role of surgery in global health and policymaking in emerging health systems of developing countries
  • Analyze stakeholders and organizational culture within the organization or service which they work

Assessment Format

• Assessment varies depending on the module but may include presentations, written assignments, MCQs, practical examination, micro-teaching assignment, protocol submission, and/or other forms of assessment as directed.
• All students will complete a research dissertation.

Accreditation and Recognition

• RCSI is a recognized University of the National University of Ireland (NUI).
• Recognition by ministries and bodies in other jurisdictions must be determined by the individual applicants.
